The Infall of Gas onto the Galactic Disk
نویسنده
چکیده
Ongoing accretion of low-metallicity gas onto the disk is a natural prediction of semi-analytical Galactic chemical evolution models. This star formation fuel ameliorates the overproduction of metal-poor Gand K-dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood which otherwise plague socalled “closed-box” models of Galaxy evolution. Do High-Velocity Clouds (HVCs) represent the source of this necessary fuel? We know that HVCs provide an important clue as to the processes governing galaxy formation and evolution what is less clear is whether their role lies more closely aligned with cosmology (as relics of the Local Group’s formation) or star formation (as tidal debris from nearby disrupted dwarfs, or the waste byproducts of disk supernova-driven winds). I provide a summary of recent speculations as to the origins of HVCs, and highlight several future projects which will lead to a deeper understanding of the role they play in galaxy evolution.

Models of the long-term evolution of the Galactic disk with viscous flows and gas infall
Radial gas flows induced by viscosity may significantly redistribute the gas component in galactic disks. On the condition that the timescale of the viscous transport is comparable to the star formation timescale, this process naturally explains the observed exponential stellar density profiles in disks independent of the density profiles of the initial disks. We discuss models for the chemical...
متن کاملThe contribution of halo red giant mass loss to the high-velocity gas falling onto the Milky Way disk
The origin of gas falling from the halo toward the disk of the Milky Way is still largely unclear. Here the amount of gas shed by the (older) halo red giants is estimated. The distribution of red giants (RGs) in the halo is not known but that of a subset of stars in the post RG phase, the sdB stars of the horizontal-branch (HB), is. Using the mid-plane density and z-distribution of sdB stars, t...
متن کاملExploring cloudy gas accretion as a source of interstellar turbulence in the outskirts of disks
High–resolution 2D–MHD numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effects of continuing infall of clumpy gas in extended H i galactic disks. Given a certain accretion rate, the response of the disk depends on its surface gas density and temperature. For Galactic conditions at a galactocentric distance of ∼ 20 kpc, and for mass accretion rates consistent with current empirica...
متن کاملStarbursts and torus evolution in AGN
Recent VLT SINFONI observations of the close environments (∼ 30 pc) of nearby AGNs have shown that thick gas tori and starbursts with ages between 10 and 150 Myr are frequently found. By applying these observations to a previously established analytical model of clumpy accretion disks, we suggest an evolutionary sequence for starburst and AGN phases. Whereas the observed properties of the gas t...
متن کاملInhomogeneous chemical evolution of the Galactic disk: evidence for sequential stellar enrichment?
We investigate the origin of the abundance variations observed among similarly aged F and G dwarfs in the local Galactic disk. We argue that orbital diffusion of stars in combination with radial abundance gradients is probably insufficient to explain these variations. We show that episodic and local infall of metaldeficient gas can provide an adequate explanation for iron and oxygen variations ...
